Re-imagining sustainable footwear for the future

I created this shoe for Adidas South Africa.
It lived alongside six artists' shoes at the new Adidas concept store in Cape Town V&A. The brief was to re-imagine sustainable footwear for the future. My focus and one of my favourite ways to create is to look at what I could reuse and upcycle. The items around us have so much potential if we look at them with the gaze of potential. An unravelled jersey is a new string, curating thread off-cuts can tell a story.
I challenged myself to create them with items I already owned, making sure that I was genuinely repurposing, recycling, and being resourceful. It is easy to pay lip service to a concept.
The insole is assembled with gold dust and the lace hook is a picture hook. The woven plastic was originally used to import rice from Thailand, and then to carry wood. All the beads have been collected from once-loved jewelry or gifted, and the pins, like any dedicated stitcher, have been lying in a drawer helping me make clothes for years.
Creativity before consumption.
